I am Professor in Experimental Dermatology and Head of the Laboratory of Experimental Dermatology at the Department of Dermatology of the University of Amsterdam (AMC). Here you can find information about my research activities concerning the immunology of vitiligo and melanoma.

November 2014: Appointed as full professor in Experimental Dermatology with focus on pigment cell disorders of the skin at the University of Amsterdam.
October 2014: Key publication on the prognostic value of vitiligo for the survival of advanced melanoma patients accepted in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (in press).
September 2014: Website of the Dutch Pigment Foundation (Pigmentfonds Nederland) launched to provide detailed information on pigment disorders to medical doctor s, patients and the general public. Read more

July 2013: Netherlands Genomics Initiative (NGI) PreSeed Grant obtained for the valorisation of our monobenzone therapy for melanoma.
June 2013: Valorisation grant (phase 1) obtained from the Technology Foundation (STW) for the development of monobenzone therapy.
January 2013: Our research has shown that vitiligo patients have a decreased risk on developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Read our new publication in the British Journal of Dermatology, and press releases by the British Association of Dermatology and the AMC.
December 2012: Invited speaker at the Life Science and Health Conference in Leiden.

June 2012: MICure wins the NGI Venture Challenge 2012. Together with Esther Tjin and TTO business developers Sanne Stembert (AMC), Rick Versteegh and Marije Marsman (LUMC), we formed the team MICure. MICure aims to develop better treatments for metastatic melanoma. The Venture Challenge is one of the Netherlands Genomics Initiative’s activities aimed at stimulating and supporting Life Sciences researchers in translating their inventions into viable business ideas. May 2012: Amsterdam Science Innovation Award 2012, runner up. I presented our new immunotherapy for melanoma in the finals. Read more
March 2012: Three new publications: new melanoma antigen published by the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Brussels in the European Journal of immunology, vitiligo susceptibility gene study of Prof Spritz, and IL-31 producing T cells found in atopic dermatitis published in Eperimental Dermatology. March 2011: Clinical trial of MI therapy, a new type of immunotherapy for melanoma, has started! This trial is based our research at the AMC of monobenzone as anti-melanoma drug. The clinical trial is performed at the Netherlands Cancer Institute/Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam (NKI-AVL). January 2011: New publication in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology about the working mechanism of skin-depimenting agent monobenzone to induce autoimmunity, anti-melanoma immunity and vitiligo. Read more
December 2010: Research grant obtained from the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF Kankerbestrijding) in collaboration with prof. dr. H. Spits). The project aims at developing new monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis or immunotherapy of melanoma.
